A Letter From The Founders
A LETTER
FROM LOS
Hola-
I'm Madee Losee, the dreamer behind Los Pillows! Starting this “little pillow project,” there are a few major Los Pillows influences worth mentioning in some detail.
My number one influence has and always will be my effortlessly-cool mom. Somehow always finding the perfect balance of chic and laidback— the home she’s made is a curiosity shop of custom wood/beach/rustic heritage pieces, the softest washed linens in existence and understated charm. Literally the one thing I can think of her never quite feeling content with is— “the pillow situation.” From bed pillows to couch pillows and everything in between. The belief that typical throw pillows were “dinky and disfunctional” was instilled at a young age, and if you really think bout it… Aren’t they tho?!
From long lead times and high prices for Etsy pillows, some custom pillows that came with a couch we disapprovingly refer to as “toast pillows,” and a series of “just ok” overpriced place holders, it’s continued to be a situation. Until alas, one day browsing the aisles of a favorite retailer my BFF sniffs out a stunning “King Euro” pillow. Although by the lighter linen fabric it was clearly intended for beds, we quickly bought four with two intended for the couch, my mom bought 12 for her window seats and countless others followed suit. These pillows have been well loved the past few years and while I thank them for bringing joy to our home… they're a bit deflative and I had a few notes.
The second influence is a bit less happy, no less meaningful. My dad, El Capitan Losee passed away in September 2022. My parents divorced when I was young and while he wasn’t around as much, we were eerily similar and connected in spirit. He didn’t leave much behind besides memories but one of my favorite things I inherited, sharing the podium with a leather moto jacket and his favorite knife, is a vibrant Mexican blanket that had accompanied us on countless camping, surfing and snowboarding trips growing up. Since his passing I’ve carted this blanket on our adventures and at home it lays neatly slung over our living room sectional.
In our predominantly black/tan/bone and natural wood living room, this super-saturated throw has become one of my greatest aesthetic joys. It’s textured, timeless, tells a story and adds a welcome POP! to our beloved neutral pallet.
Ding-ding-ding, what if we combined these two home favorites?
1 + 1 = better
Holaaa Los Pillows. Like many 30-something’s these days, I’ve dreamed of starting something of our own. With a decade career in startup environments, predominantly technical apparel and footwear, this thoughtful simple concept was an attainable leap and entirely relevant to my sewn product and e-commerce experience.
Time to tap in influence #3. My best friend, the love of my life, my future wife and Co-Founder, Mel (Losee coming 2024). My incredibly intelligent and supportive babe. She stood by me when I stubbornly decided I no longer wanted to work for “the man” and took odd jobs to barely make bills the last almost two years. We’ve held each other through countless lows on our respective and intertwined healing journeys since we met. And most importantly, she’s never tried to dissuade me from dreaming big. She runs with my tangents, she’s a research and operational maven, she’s cool as heck and I wouldn’t want to enter into a partnership professionally or in life with anyone else.
Say hi Mel.
Mel: Hi!
It’s not enough to make a good thing, we need to do good things. Starting a business is a hard thing, but as my dad always said-- "we can do hard things" too.
If you've read this far you've taken a sincere interest in our brand and for that we sincerely thank you.
We're here for you should you need us.
Big Love,
xx Madee + Mel
